404: WMD Not Found

Rog posted in

Well this gave me a good chuckle and cheered me a bit: The Cannot find Weapons of Mass Destruction page.

It's also the top result if you search for "Weapons of Mass Destruction" on Google.

I want the mousepad. =)

Thieves suck

Rog posted in

After reading something on Dev's blog this morning, I told myself that I was going to write something of substance when I got home. I thought I might write about the way that people make decisions and I'd make some solumn but upbeat conclusions in that optomistic way that folks find annoying. I think of a glass half full when it comes to people.

I was thinking exactly that when I got to where I'd locked my bike for the evening. Once I saw my bike though, the thoughts had all turned to dust. Suddenly I hated people.

Someone had stolen the seat from my bike.

It's a cheap-ass bike with a seat that is probably worth less than a dollar or two since it wasn't exactly sparkling and polished. My immediate and continuing thought was what kind of jerk would steal a worthless part off of somebody's basic transportation?

I'm not in a happy mood.

I'd rather have a Rubic's or a GameCube

Rog posted in

Apparently the Apple Cube is "Alive and Selling" according to Wired. Whodathunk?

I have just one friend with one of those forsaken beasts and aside from being overpriced and annoying (the hand waving on/off feature has got to be one of the most moronic interfaces I've ever seen), it's also IMO butt-ugly. It's a case of Apple taking the shiny plastic look too far. It doesn't even have the quirky ugliness of the iLamp.

Granted, Macs aren't so evil these days. In the past I was often saying that I'm an OS whore, I'll use any OS except for the MacOS. That changed with OS X, although it's not really the MacOS, it's a gaudy interface on top of BSD. I'd rather just get any old PC box and install BSD a lot cheaper.

Every time I've considered a Mac, I've been held back by three factors:

  1. I don't like the interface.
  2. The prices are higher than a sufficient PC
  3. I like games, the Mac has a serious lack of the games I want to play.

There's one thing that I still strongly recommend Macs for. If you live with a PC geek that's always taking over your computer, get a Mac for yourself. They're less likely to touch it once the initial curiosity phase is over. This works especially well if your PC geek is a gamer, but it doesn't work as well if your PC geek is a *nix (Linux, BSD, etc.) geek.

Meanwhile, you'll probably be just as happy with the Mac as a PC since it's not all that different when it comes to web browsing, chatting, listening to music and whatnot. Just don't expect a full and timely selection of games.

The best Mac is easily the current iBook, it's the only Mac that's competitively priced.

Quake, with facelifts!

Rog posted in

TelejanoRecently a friend mentioned Tenebrae, an open source Quake engine renderer that uses lighting tricks similar to the upcoming (once again delayed) Doom 3 game from id Software.

Pushing Quake into the eye candy of today's technology is a grand idea. The gameplay of the original Quake is well balanced and solid and many people agree that it puts to shame Quake 2 & 3 and the various incarnations of Unreal. It just doesn't look pretty and that's a harsh drawback in such a visual medium.

In steps the open-source renderers. Tenebrae is just one of many, it's more of a technology demo actually, because the default textures, models and levels of Quake weren't designed for per pixel lighting and shadow stencils. Still it's a radical improvement that kind of blows you away when you compare it directly to say, basic GLQuake.

This morning I tried a few of these engines/renderers and I took some comparative screenshots for your amusement:

  • Original Quake (screenshot) & GLQuake (screenshot).
  • Tenebrae (screenshot) with mostly default options, check out the rays cast by the stain glass window on the left side.
  • Darkplaces (screenshot), which finally adds proper in-menu gamma correction, plus a host of other features, including proper mousewheel support.
  • NPR Quake (screenshot), which I had to include because the sketch mode amuses me. =)
  • Telejano (screenshot), which is by far my favorite because it does the best to improve what Quake actually does rather than just shove in effects just because they are flashy. The transparency, fog and geocaustic effects are especially excellent. Telejano also maintains a much better framerate than some of the other renderers.

These are just the engines that I tried, there are additional ones out there.

Aside from the engine modifications, there are projects out there to replace Quake's textures and models with art that is a little more up to spec with today's hardware.

Congradulations to Gored & Helena.

After 14 years of dating, they've finally wed. It was a beautiful ceremony. Gored looked especially dapper in his tux and tophat, especially when standing next to his hearse. Helena was absolutely stunning in her dress. The day was warm, pleasant and enjoyable. The wedding itself was not too formal, not too casual, a nice inbetween.

I'll try to get some photos of the wedding posted soon and who knows, maybe some comments from the bride and groom. =)

Stuff that would be nice

Rog posted in

Devon just got a sewing machine for her birthday and honestly at the moment, I can't think of a cooler gift to get. It's something that's useful, self-empowering and very likely to be appreciated, yet sewing machines are so expensive that people rarely buy them for themselves.

That got me to thinking selfishly about cool things that I'd like to have that would make my standard of living seem better. Things that I don't absolutely need, but that would be useful and/or nice and yet I couldn't afford them even if I got a new job tomorrow.

  • A mini-food processor. Not an all-in-one-wonder, but something small and cute that doesn't take up too much counterspace but that I don't have to spend so much time with a chopping board for my diced onions and crushed garlic.

  • An air conditioner. Right now I'm thinking everyone in Vancouver would like one of these.
  • Get my rollerskates fixed. They are so old that the rubber on the moving parts has disintegrated. I'll have to take a picture of them, they are true 70's skates in black and bright yellow. I don't even know where to take them to get them fixed.
  • A DVD+R burner, so I can finally upgrade from my 4x CDR burner.
  • A wireless webcam to replace my really aging antique of a webcam.
  • A digital camera. My old scanner is dying and I figure it'd be nice to just skip the scanning process altogether.
  • A DV camera (firewire), because I always wanted to do more video editing.
  • A nice hosting package so I could put more high-bandwidth stuff online.

Of course, I'm dreaming with a wish list like this, but sometimes it's nice to dream.

    What's better than a cover?

    Rog posted in

I've discovered that I'm still in love with Weird Al Yankovic.

Just as I thought Weird Al had gotten stale, I heard a few tracks from his latest album (Poodle Hat) and had that wonderful glow you get the first time that you hear a new Weird Al lyric transmogrification. Sure the glow fades on repeated listening, but hey, I appreciate it nonetheless.

This time around Al parodied both new an old. The expected Avril Lavigne and Eminem tunes were there, plus an old Billy Joel and even an homage to Bob Dylan.

Here's a sample of lyrics from "A Complicated Song":

I had so much on my mind
    I thought maybe I'd unwind
Try out that new roller coaster ride
    And the guide

    Said not to stand
    But that's a demand
    That I couldn't meet
    I got on my feet
    And stood up instead
And knocked off my head, you see

    Tell me
Why'd I have to go and get myself decapitated?
This really is a major inconvenience, oh man, I really hate it
    Such a drag, now ... Can't eat, I can't breathe, I can't snore
I can't belch or yodel anymore
Can't spit or blow my nose or even read Sports Illustrated

    What's better than a cover? A parody.

    Gameslate's new look

    Rog posted in

I'm going with a much more streamlined look for Gameslate this time around.

In the past, for Gameslate I've focused on basic HTML 3.2 that could be read and displayed by nearly every browser since '95 or so, including text-only browsers and whatnot. Although that fit my sensibilities, it kind of held Gameslate back. CSS was used, but only for text styles, allowing a wide margin of falling back on older browsers.

Don't get me wrong, my focus is still strongly on HTML. I'm naturally a minimalist when it comes to Javascript, Flash, Java, DHTML, etc. or even the use of images. I've just moved from an archaic table layout to a more advanced CSS1 & CSS2 layout. Much like my blog-page here, it's all about the stylesheets.

One major difference you may notice is the inclusion of a non-typical font for much of the look of the new site. Rather than push a graphical Gameslate logo, it's drawn in a chalk-style font. The font is embedded for IE users, but the rest of us (I say us because I'm not really an IE fan myself) can download and install it. Even if you don't, I'm happy with a branding of the site just using typical fonts.

Now that the general layout is done, I can get back to work on the coding.

In case you're curious to take a look, a mockup is in place now on the actual Gameslate site.

    Fragapalooza '03

    Rog posted in

My pal Ryan and crew have been out of town with the yearly Fragapalooza trip. This year they've done some additional vacation-like wandering. I'm kinda jealous that I missed another year of fragging and travelling.

As per usual, Ryan has kept a photo journal of things. My favorite shot:This priceless photo of Glen in Vulcan, Alberta.
