Monolith gets propped up
I have to hand it to Mythic for taking some serious steps towards solving WAR's population problems, especially considering that they're likely to get some bad press for what seems a lot like server merging. But their game may make or break on the realm imbalances, so kudos to them for taking some necessary steps.
Our guild's server choice Monolith has been targeted as one of the medium-population server to get free character transfers from lower pop. servers.
Monolith seemed like a good choice early on at game release, but it's been steadily sliding into decline since. Our Order population feels tiny at this point, aside from some key organized guilds set on world domination. Even within our own small guild a couple of players indicated the imbalance between Destruction & Order as their reasons to leave the game, or switch servers / sides.
It's a short-term solution of course, just upping the population won't fix the overall realm imbalance, but hopefully Mythic has more up their sleeve (the new Classes next month should help).
Altdorf is burning, again
Altdorf was taken today on the Averheim server and the word is sneak attack, or at least while Order's guard was down. Waaagh! has a nice writeup about it including Mark Jacob's response to the community (seen directly in this forum thread).
Imbalance
Long before stepping foot in Warhammer, plenty of us predicted the two factors causing the negative situations involved here: Population imbalance and the lack of scheduling for attack windows.
The racial choices obviously gave Destruction the cool factor, while Order seemed dorky to me. How many elf fans will choose High Elves over Dark Elves, seriously? And why didn't they bring in the knights-in-armor Bretonnians instead of the men-in-tights Empire? Don't even get me started on the Dwarves versus Greenskins.
Mythic over-assumed the "good guys" would automatically attract players when the truth is the human race is more visually inclined than morally. =P
RvR Mess
In that post linked above, Mark Jacobs sounds a bit defensive to me. I don't want to be too hard on the man, he's created a great game so far, plus what he's saying makes some logical sense. But it feels a bit like shifting blame to the playerbase when ultimately no one is more responsible for his game than he is. He has control over the game mechanics and that includes their flaws, oversights and shortcomings.
I'd have rather heard a good solid plan from him on how they're going to fix RvR into being more fun. Better ideas than nerfing Scenarios at least.
From what I've seen so far, RvR is a mess in the game. Tier 4 is plagued with these problems while the lower tier RvR areas are nearly a wash from being too-open, too-unimportant. I hoped that despite my misgivings it would somehow work, but it hasn't so far. Thankfully the game has many other redeeming qualities than RvR.
I really hope Mr. Jacobs is willing to step up to the plate to fix problem #1 (population imbalance), but on problem #2 (RvR scheduling) I'm pretty sure he's adamantly opposed and IMHO that's a shame because it'll just mean realms will take turns at exchanging sieges and most of it will be Player-versus-NPC rather than Player-versus-Player.
Mythic has been proactive about fixing issues with their game, so I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, but they should have seen this one coming a thousand miles away.
Tier 3 Scenarios: Mini Reviews
Skereye is Rank 24 now, Renown 18. I took a break from Scenarios for awhile but the last two days I've put in some good hours at it to catch up my Renown.
Just like Tier 2, I think my natural tendency is to knee-jerk dislike a new Scenario until I've got the hang of it, heh. But I've been in all of these a number of times now and have had good times and bad in each. Here's my take:
Tier 3 Scenarios in order of preference:
- Doomfist Crater - I loved the two Tier 1 maps with the stationary flags. It's great to fight around the flag pole without having to interact with it. Doomfist has one central stationary flag point, plus three pickup objects (sort of like Mourkin Temple).
Doomfist Crater is my preferred Scenario by far. I also love the terrain, the elevated ramps are great, getting knocked off removes a player from the fray without destroying them either. There's also plenty of opportunity for line-of-sight tricks.
- Black Fire Basin - Classic Capture-The-Flag. There's enough distance to bring mounts into play, which should disappoint me as a Squig Herder but I don't mind that so much. Maybe it's because I love getting up on the Order's ramparts and shoot down at them in their own flag base.
- Highpass Cemetary - I like this one just because the esthetics are so good, the volumetric fog looks great amongst the tombstones. The game mechanic is similar to Khaine's Embrace in Tier 1, but it's a smaller map.
- Tabalec Dam - I'm still lost on this map and I think I will be forever. It's large and I never feel involved in the whole blowing up of the Dam / Windmill. Still, it's not annoying either, as the most open map it's great for skirmishing.
- Tor Anroc - I stand by my decades-long belief that throwing people into lava is the most overused and lame mechanic in all of videogamedom. Soooo tired of lava. Whether my side wins or loses, it's just not very entertaining to chase someone carrying the bauble on open ground surrounded by fiery pits of death.
- Lost Temple of Isha - It's capture the temple then hold it. Great idea, I thought at first. Except it's so easy to defend with the layout. Whoever gets there first wins. I've never seen anyone lose the temple once they've got it and everytime I play someone else says so in scenario chat. This map desperately needs something like the ramparts I mentioned for Black Fire Basin.
Overall, I'll have to say, I still enjoyed Tier 1 Scenarios best. I wish Mythic had made Scenarios inclusive, added maps and still allow you to play the earlier ones (only within your Tier of course).
Tier 2 grew on me, maybe Tier 3 will, but even with more maps to choose from the Scenario quality IMHO is tapering off a bit. The variety is nice though, all of these maps are very unique choices.
