Finally official, KOTOR as an MMORPG

Rog posted in

I suppose I should change my old blog category of "BioWare MMO" to "The Old Republic".

I believe that it wasn't so much of a secret as it was BioWare testing the waters. Star Wars was an obvious choice, but it's a license that's been heavily over-used and has already been attempted as an MMORPG. I think they were measuring just how much anticipation there was. Turns out quite a lot.

The pivotal factor? BioWare themselves.

BioWare has incredible talent to tap from and they have a unique (in this industry) approach towards universes created by others, they delve into them as if they were their own. That's what made Knights of the Old Republic into magic and I think we're all betting they can do it again.

Despite that, I've been pointlessly crossing my fingers, wishing BioWare would use one of their own IPs for their upcoming MMO. At first I thought the chances of Star Wars were slim. Oh how wrong I was. It became more and more obvious it was the fan favourite and earlier this year it was all but cemented in.

I'm still not sure whether to jump for joy or cry. I'd have loved to have seen BioWare use the Mass-Effect universe, or try something altogether new. At the same time, an MMORPG from BioWare comes with excitement and if they must do Star Wars, I'm pretty happy it's in the KOTOR deep-dark-in-the-past setting.

If anyone can do it right, I'd bet my money on BioWare.

Hitman hit the right spot for me

Rog posted in ·

I just saw Hitman, the film based upon the excellent series of Hitman games by IO Interactive.

The first thing I want to say: It's nice to see a movie that caters to fans of the original games. Hitman stays true to the series and since I loved the games, I thoroughly enjoyed the film.

If you've never played the games however, start with them, not this movie.

While playing the games isn't necessary to follow the general plot of the film, I think any true enjoyment of it pretty much requires that you've not only played the games, but that you liked them too. Under that combo of circumstances, it's good stuff. I imagine otherwise, it's probably getting negative reviews.

Sometimes I enjoy focused media that doesn't try to be the world's biggest blockbuster and simply does what it's meant to. These games have a cult following, so should the movie. I especially liked the extra little goodies specifically for the fans, things like angled shots that remind you of the games, but not blatant enough to be cheesy. This is the kind of movie that Doom should have been.

I got stuck on placing the lead actor, I knew I recognized his voice, but he did such a good job emulating Agent 47's demeanor that I didn't sort it out until I got home and IMDB gave me a hand. I realized where I'd seen him before, I'd watched two seasons of Deadwood starring: Timothy Olyphant.

If you are interested in the games, I recommend playing the most recent: Hitman: Blood Money or just get the Triple Pack.
